Visa Minimum Payments

7/9/2013

I recently went to eat in a pub near Bude, Cornwall. It was a place I often went to eat, but on this occasion I was forced to complain because they insisted on a minimum charge on my Visa card.

Read my review on Trip Adviser. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g1749693-d4366603-r174194696-The_Stables_Inn-Kilkhampton_Cornwall_England.html#readReview

Partly due to the rude treatment from the management I emailed Visa to report the fact the establishment was trying it on with their customers by trying to charge a minimum payment.

This is what I said.

Dear sir,

I wish to complain about the Stables http://www.stablesbar.co.uk/

On Monday, they refused to accept my Visa card unless I purchases a minimum of £20. I understand my contract with you is my card will be accepted without minimum charge. How are you able to help me with this matter. It lead to an embarrassing situation, ending in me being told to leave in front of the other customers.

Yours faithfully

Paul Clews

This was the reply from Visa.

Thank you for contacting Visa Europe.

Visa has certain regulations that all merchants accepting Visa cards must follow. One of those rules is that Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items.

If you run into a problem like this with a merchant, please notify your Visa card-issuing financial institution. Visa Member financial institutions have access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations. They also have access to the Notification of Customer Complaint forms that should be used by the financial institution to document and file this type of complaint.

Thank you for writing,

Consumer Support │Visa Europe

I'm now waiting for Nationwide to send me the relevant form to take my complaint further.

Watch this space.

Tuning Your Guitar

27/5/2013

Standard Tuning
The notes of the open srings of a guitar in standard tuning are (starting with the thickest string)  E, A, D, G, B and E. To remember this, Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears.
The easiest way to tune your guitar is with an electronic tuner. They come in various types, but are really cheap these days, and well worth the investment. There are also internet tuners, mobile phone and ipod tuners these days. I use the Polytune app for iPhone/iPod.
It is also vital to be able to tune by hear. so this is how it's done. Assuming the 6th string is in or at least nearly in tune, hold down the the note on the 5th fret. The note produced should be the same as the open 5th string. If it is not, turn the tuning peg on the 5th string until the notes produced are the same. Once this is completed hold down the 5th fret on the 5th string. This should produce the same note as the open 4th string. Again if this is not the case, then turn the tuning peg on the 4th string until it is the same. Hold down the 5th fret of the 4th string. This note should be the same as the open 3rd string. Again if it is not, turn the tuning peg until it is the
same. This time hold down the 4th fret of the 3rd string. This fret should produce the same note as the 2nd string. If does not, then turn the tuning peg of the 2nd string until it does. Finally, hold down the 5th fret of the 2nd string, this should produce the same note as the open 1st string. If it is not,
turn the 1st tuning peg until it is the same.
This should have put the guitar in tune. It is not very easy to do and does take practice.

Last Tuesday I met @NaomiChapmanSMM at @stationcafebarn to review my use of social media. Now there are few people I rub up the wrong way on Twitter, even managed to get a minor troll, but since I’m more successful than any of them on that platform, and many people complement on my promotion of North Devon, it’s businesses and organisations, and particularly my home town of Ilfracombe, I will not be taking advice from them.
Those of you that know me will know, twitter is by far my favourite social network. I know it inside out, all it’s apps, everything. I joined myspace when it started years ago. Still have a couple of accounts, post almost everyday, but don’t really do that much with them anymore. I joined Facebook just less than a year back. Still don’t really like or understand it. It feels slow, complicated when it doesn’t have to be, and just doesn’t work that well. This week I’ve being promoting my pages on there with little success. Is Facebook a dead duck, or a dying duck anyway?
We had a look at LinkedIn. Naomi advised me to finish filling in my profile. I did this. She also advised me not to use twitter Hashtags on LinkedIn and Facebook. Well I continue to use the Hashtags, because I post to all three networks at the same time via Hootsuite, on my iPhone. I don’t have time to do it separately, that’s why I use Hootsuite. It is a great app for posting, and Twitter always takes priority over other networks. Simply because I find it works best.
Finally we looked at google+. I have had an account for some time now, but not done loads with it. Just poked it with a stick really. When I joined it there was nothing on it. It could be argued there still isn’t. But, it is up and coming, and feels nice to use. It looks a Facebook, but it actually lets you connect with people, unlike Facebook, but like Twitter. Which is useful for a social network to do I think. Following my meeting with Naomi, I took her advice, and built three new Google+ pages. They seem to be doing well.
Thank you for your time Naomi, it’s been really useful. Get in touch with Naomi and get your social media moving. http://www.naomichapmansmm.co.uk
